They are also sometimes called IR Thermometers, Infrared Temperature Guns or Laser Thermometers as many use a laser for targeting. Infrared Thermometers are portable battery powered hand held instruments that provide a non-contact temperature measurement by measuring the infrared energy emitted by the target. The distance to spot ratio (D:S) determines the target size measured as a ratio to the distance the device is held from the target. If a Infrared thermometer has a D:S of 12:1 then at 12" measuring distance the measurement will be the average of a spot 1" in diameter.
